SUP Happens! >> Trip Tips >> Trip Tip – Jungfernsee, Lehnitzsee & Krampnitzsee

🛶 Trip details

Length: ~14.5 km
Type: Round trip
Time: ~3.5 hours with one short coffee/snack stop
Plan for: 4–5.5 hours if you want a proper lunch break
Level: Intermediate to experienced
Start/End: Säulenpappelallee Berliner Vorstadt

This is one of those paddles that feels a bit more grand than it has any right to. You launch close to Potsdam city center, paddle past stately villas and old bridges, drift into quieter water up north, and at some point find yourself staring at a house flying a Prussian flag like the last hundred years were just a minor administrative inconvenience.

The route combines wide-open Jungfernsee with the narrower, calmer Lehnitzsee and Krampnitzsee sections. It is scenic all the way through, easy to follow, and very doable as a half-day trip. On our run it took about 3.5 hours with one coffee-and-snacks stop. Add lunch and a longer break, and 4–5 hours is a more realistic plan.

🧭 Route Directions

  • Launch from the small grassy bank near Säulenpappelallee and head north-west towards Jungfernsee.
  • Once you have the Brücke des Friedens (Nedlitzer Südbrücke) in sight, stick to the right bank and turn north-east towards Lehnitzsee. You do not actually reach the bridge before turning, so don’t keep charging straight at it like it’s your checkpoint.
  • Soon after, on your left, you’ll pass Villa Sigismund, also known as Haus Lehnitzsee / Villa von Diringshofen. If you’re lucky, the Prussian flag will be flying above it, which adds a very unnecessary and very enjoyable time-travel effect to the whole thing.
  • This is a good stretch for a short floating coffee break before continuing north towards Krampnitzsee.
  • As you head further north, the scenery becomes quieter and slightly wilder. At the northern part of Krampnitzsee, look out for the impressive tower of the former historic military base at Krampnitz. It rises above the trees in a properly dramatic way and makes a solid turnaround point.
  • On the way back south, stick to the right bank and pass under Persiusbrücke bridge (Nedlitzer Nordbrücke). This is peak Potsdam: a 19th-century bridge by Ludwig Persius, paired with the striking Müllersches Gutshaus, which is built in the style of a Norman-castle. Very extra, very Potsdam.
  • Continue west, passing Robinsoninsel on the right. For drinks/snacks, turn right towards Kleines See-Restaurant. It’s an easy detour and a very civilised mid-route stop.
  • From the restaurant, head back east and continue on the right bank, going under Brücke des Friedens this time. Keep an eye out for larger barges and tour boats, which occasionally pass through this part of the route. Nothing dramatic on a calm day, though they deserve respect and a bit of space. Stay right after the bridge as well.
  • Keep going south-east towards the starting point.
  • Land back where you started at the LZ near Säulenpappelallee.

⚠️ Safety & Conditions

  • This area near Potsdam has a reputation for wind gusts, and deservedly so. Even when the forecast looks mild on paper, the open water around Jungfernsee can get surprisingly choppy. A listed 10–15 km/h can feel like more once you’re out there (it feels at least double).
  • Typical likely outcome on a good day: a scenic, straightforward paddle with a few lively sections.
  • Worst-case stuff worth respecting: sudden gusts, messy chop on open water, and bigger vessel traffic near the busier channel sections.
  • So the honest recommendation is:
  • Choose a very low-wind day if possible. This route is best for intermediate to experienced paddlers, especially outside full summer conditions.

🚗 Logistics: Launch & Access

Launch Zone:

The LZ near Säulenpappelallee works well as a simple hand launch. Short carry, grassy bank, low hassle.

Alternatively, you can start near Wirtshaus Moorlake restaurant, on the eastern bank of the Havel, especially if you plan to end the trip with a good meal.

By car:
🚙 Parking is possible around Böcklinstraße and Rembrandtstraße.

Important detail: in this area, parking is paid from 1 May to 15 September, daily 08:00–20:00, at €0.50 per 20 minutes. Always check the exact sign on your street section when you arrive.

Alternative options:
You can also use the paid parking at Am Neuen Garten 47.
Another possible access option is near Wirtshaus Moorlake, which can work well depending on how you want to structure the day.

By public transport:
🚉 From Potsdam Hbf, take tram 93 towards the Glienicker Brücke / Berliner Vorstadt area. From Berlin, a practical option is to get to Wannsee or Potsdam Hbf first, then continue by local bus or tram.
🚶 Walk ~10 min to the LZ.

📍 Noteworthy spots nearby:

Kleines See-Restaurant is the obvious on-route lunch option and fits the tour nicely if you want to stretch it into a slower 4–5 hour outing. For a shorter run, a coffee and snack break on the water works perfectly well too.

Heiliger See is beautiful and absolutely worth a quick detour on foot before or after the paddle.

The entrance from the water side was blocked on our day anyway, and in any case the local park rules prohibit operating watercraft from the banks in the park, so it should stay a walking side quest, not part of the paddle route. Still, it’s a very worthwhile look. Quiet water, elegant surroundings, and strong “Potsdam showing off again” energy.
